I got a new pc from my dads company, and ever since I started using it, this message shows up:
';M:\pc\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.';
This is so freaking annoying, because it won't allow me to download programs that doesn't ask you to put shortcuts! And altso, somebody told me that I should change the place I'm saving it to, but I don't know how, because when I'm ex. downloading a picture from the Internet %26amp; click on the desktop icon, the same message comes up! I need some help - QUICKLY! Thanks.Desktop issues! Can't download anything onto desktop?
there should be an option in your browser that tells you where to store the downloads. For example, in Firefox, it is under the MAIN tab...it says to put downloads on my My Documents folder. Not sure about IE (since i hardly use it). But i'm sure there is an option for that also. Check it out. good luck.Desktop issues! Can't download anything onto desktop?
Considering you got this computer from your Dad's company, you should think about having it reformated. A lot of the reasons you might be having these problems is because a computer (when used by a company for example) is set up to have certain features allowed and not allowed. Granted, Im not a tech by any means but I can tell you that I have been in this situation EXACTLY before. And the only way that I could get this fixed was to reformat the harddrive itself. And the only way to do that is to have the original software of Windows that was used before. If there is another way to fix this, I pray you find it because its not hard to do a reformat but its a pain nonetheless.
Now about your saving to a new spot, thats something you might try first and foremost. . .
When you go to save an item or download something, sure try sending those or that item to a new spot on your computer. When you get the download window to popup on your screen, use one two ways to change the spot to save it all in or at on your computer.
FIRST TRY THIS - On the left of the download-window, you should see buttons that will direct you to different areas of your computer; MY DOCUMENTS, DESKTOP, MY COMPUTER or MY NETWORK PLACES. Simply click on one of those and it will take you directly to that section of the computer where you can save the item(s) in question instead of your desktop.
OR YOU CAN TRY THIS - There is a dropdown at the top of the download-window with an arrow that points down. The arrow will pop open a dropdown list where you can choose where to save something as well. Simply select the destination spot there and you should be able to change what you need there.
Otherwise, because it is a computer that was recently used by a company that means that the features used while at the company in question are still in affect and they need to be changed by the system-tech there or you simply need to reformat the computer. Reformating the computer is simple though.
Just get a hold a new Windows XP disk and let it do its magic. Doing this will change everything for you and allow you to start from scratch so the computer can be set up to your needs.
If this was in fact something your fathers work place, you might have him take it back to the system-techs there to have the issue fixed first and foremost though. Because it was a ';company based'; computer, it has been set up for those purposes. Unfortunately because you are using it as home-office system now, youre not able to use it like you would want to because of that reason now.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!
I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.
